The word translated as Serpent is nachash<\/em> (vxn<\/span> – Strongs 5175).\u00a0 According to the Gesenius lexicon nachash<\/em> comes from a root which means \u201cto whisper\u201d or \u201cto hiss.\u201d\u00a0 vxn<\/span> can also mean \u201cto divine\u201d, or \u201cto enchant\u201d (Strongs 5172, 5173).\u00a0 Gesenius relates that this later meaning stemmed from the word describing the whispers of the soothsayers.
