We are not finished with the evidences for a previous helpmate in Ge 2:18.\u00a0 Perhaps the most provocative evidence for Lilith in the Bible comes in the second half of the verse.\u00a0 As shown in the literal translation of Table 3\u20118, the literal Hebrew concludes with an amazing statement.\u00a0 It states that a helpmate was shown to Adam before Eve existed.\u00a0 The key word leading to this interpretation is k\u2019neged\u2019v<\/em> (w:dgn:k<\/span>).\u00a0 It literally means \u201cas shown before him.\u201d\u00a0 The root word is neged<\/em> or its sister nagad<\/em> (dgn<\/span> – Strongs 5048, 5046).\u00a0 Neged<\/em> means \u201cbefore\u201d, as in being in front of something.\u00a0 Nagad<\/em> means \u201cto show.\u201d\u00a0 Neged<\/em> and nagad<\/em> are essentially the same word with different implied shades of meaning.\u00a0 When something is placed neged<\/em> (before) a person, it is nagad (shown) unto him.\u00a0 K\u2019neged\u2019v<\/em> is the neged<\/em> root prefixed with a kahf<\/em> (k<\/span>) inseparable preposition meaning \u201cas\u201d and suffixed by a vahv<\/em> (w<\/span>) singular masculine pronominal suffix meaning \u201chim.\u201d\u00a0 Thus k\u2019neged\u2019v<\/em> literally means \u201cas shown him\u201d or \u201cas [set] before him.\u201d\u00a0 Perhaps it is best to just combine both shades of meaning into a composite translation, \u201cas shown before him.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

As seen in the literal translation below and the word-by-word breakdown in Table 3\u20119, the phrase \u201ca help as shown before him\u201d is used again in Ge 2:20.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The use of k\u2019neged\u2019v<\/em> in verses 18 and 20 has long puzzled translators and commentators.\u00a0 Although the word\u2019s literal meaning is simple enough to understand, its implication is perplexing.\u00a0 The literal Hebrew implies that Adam had personally seen a previous mate right in front of his face.\u00a0 Traditional interpreters go to great lengths to explain this.\u00a0 They are forced to revert to tortured Hebrew and allegory to explain the literal Hebrew.\u00a0 The KJV goes so far as to completely ignore the word in its translation of both verses.\u00a0 Many commentators hold that k\u2019neged\u2019v<\/em> indicates that Adam\u2019s helpmate would be before him, near, close, and personal.\u00a0 However, these explanations would really only make sense with the absence of the kahf<\/em> preposition.\u00a0 Adam Clark attempts to explain k\u2019neged\u2019v as implying that Eve would be standing before or opposite to Adam in the sense of being \u201cone like\u201d or \u201cas himself.\u201d [1]<\/a> \u00a0However, having k\u2019neged\u2019v<\/em> to connote this allegorical meaning is tortured Hebrew.\u00a0 Rashi argues a similar meaning for the word, in that it indicated \u201copposite\u201d and \u201copposed to him.\u201d\u00a0 Rashi explains that this meant that \u201cif he is worthy she shall be a help to him; if he is unworthy she shall be opposed to him, to fight him.\u201d\u00a0 This suffers similar problems to Clarke\u2019s translation, and provides a completely unsubstantiated claim for what the word implies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

All explanations outside of the Lilith legend fail to address the literal Hebrew of verses 18 and 20.\u00a0 Those passages are clear that God was going to make for Adam \u201ca help as shown before him.\u201d\u00a0 This implies that before Eve even existed, a helpmate stood before Adam and was shown to him.\u00a0 Besides Lilith, nothing can explain this previous woman.\u00a0<\/p>\n
